Mills College was founded in 1852 as the Young Ladies Seminary of Benecia in Benecia, California.

In 1865 Cyrus and Susan Mills purchased the school and six years later they moved the campus to it's current site in Oakland, California and it was renamed Mills College.

Today the College is a private liberal arts college with an all female undergraduate student body.

The campus sits on 135 wooded acres in the foothills of Oakland, just across the bay from San Francisco.
